Nottingham Raman Microscopy & Spectroscopy Symposium
Date and time
Location
Highfield House
University of Nottingham University Park Nottingham NG7 2RD United KingdomDescription
UNICAS (University of Nottingham Interdisciplinary Centre for Analytical Science) is pleased to support this Symposium, celebrating the exciting and wide ranging applications of
Raman Microscopy and Spectroscopy
Across the physical and life sciences to the arts and humanities, Raman microscopy and spectroscopy have become essential multidisciplinary tools for the broadest spectrum of analysis. It has been used for determining chemical and structural changes in advanced nanoscale materials, monitoring the release of the next generation of drug molecules into the human body and authentication of precious gemstones and minerals. And did you know that the technique has been used in the analysis of ancient manuscripts?
Delegates will hear from invited guest speakers and current users about their research using the techniques.
- Prof Andy Beeby (Durham) on his work with medieval manuscripts
- Dr Cinzia Casiraghi (Manchester) on her work with graphene
- Prof Mike George (Nottingham) on his work with Raman Spectroscopy
- Dr Ian Hutchinson (Leicester) on his work detecting signs of life on Mars
- Dr Ioan Notingher (Nottingham) on his work with nanomaterials, live cells and disease diagnosis
- Dr Paul Pudney (Unilever Research) on his work with in-vivo raman of skin and hair and work with food and flavourings
We welcome researchers wishing to present a poster or give a talk at the event, and ask that you make this clear when reserving your place. Prizes of £50 for the best talk and poster to be awarded on the day. The deadline for submission of abstracts is Thursday 18th June.
We are keen to welcome potential new users of these techniques and will look forward to showing you how we can help your research and answer any questions you may have.
By attending the Symposium you will also be entered in to a competition to win free equipment time to explore novel applications of Raman microscopy and spectroscopy.
Organised by
UNICAS (University of Nottingham Interdisciplinary Centre for Analytical Science) is a long-standing University initiative which brings together cross-discipline groups and funds exciting, novel research projects involving analytical science.
Each year we organise sandpit events to facilitiate face to face networking between different faculties, schools and departments. We fund novel and scientifically excellent research projects arising from these sandpits.
Dates for upcoming events:
UNICAS:
Wednesday 16 October 2019, University Park
Wednesday 27 November 2019, Jubilee Campus
Wednesday 4 December 2019, Sutton Bonington (joint with UNICAS @ GS)
Thursday 9 January 2020, University Park
Thursday 16 January 2020, University Park (joint with UNICAS @ GS)
UNICAS@Graduate School
Wednesday 6 November 2019, University Park
Wednesday 4 December 2019, Sutton Bonington (joint with UNICAS)
Thursday 16 January 2020, University Park (joint with UNICAS)
Please note that there are 2 types of UNICAS sandpits, each with different funding amounts available, eligibility criteria and application forms. Whilst attendance at either Sandpit type is open to all as a networking opportunity, there are application restrictions based on job role/student status for both schemes. The lead applicant must have attended a sandpit corresponding to the scheme for which they are applying. See the UNICAS website for further details about the 2 schemes.
